The Bollywood film industry is gearing up for a significant shift in genre, with a wave of zombie thrillers expected to captivate audiences next year. Moving away from traditional romance, adventure, and action, filmmakers are increasingly focusing on the horror-thriller niche, featuring major stars like Ranveer Singh and Kartik Aaryan.
Ranveer Singh, who achieved massive box-office success with the Aditya Dhar-directed film 'Dhurandhar', is now preparing to headline a new project titled 'Pralay'. While this film marks his foray into the zombie genre, he will face stiff competition from Kartik Aaryan. According to reports from the Deccan Chronicle, Kartik Aaryan is working on an as-yet-untitled zombie thriller directed by Vishnuvardhan. While initial expectations suggested Ranveer might secure a first-mover advantage, rumors indicate that the director intends to release Kartik’s film in early 2027, potentially hitting theaters before 'Pralay'.
Production timelines for these projects are already in motion. The untitled Kartik Aaryan film is scheduled to begin shooting next month with a target release for mid-2027, while the production for 'Pralay' is expected to conclude by the end of next year. 'Pralay', directed by Jai Mehta, is notably inspired by the novel 'Blindness' by Nobel laureate José Saramago.
The trend is not limited to these two actors. Tiger Shroff is also set to join the zombie craze in an upcoming zombie-comedy directed by Ahmed Khan. Additionally, Teja Sajja and Shanaya Kapoor are working on a sequel to the blockbuster Telugu film 'Zombie Reddy'.
Indian audiences have previously been introduced to the genre through Saif Ali Khan’s 2013 cult comedy 'Go Goa Gone' and the 2020 Netflix series 'Betaal'. With viewers now accustomed to international content like 'Train to Busan' and 'All of Us Are Dead', filmmakers are emphasizing that producing a quality film is essential to meeting global standards in this competitive new landscape.
