Iran has officially suspended its commitments under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the United States, according to an announcement by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. The official stated that Tehran’s decision follows what it describes as the continued violation of the agreement’s framework by the United States.
Reporting on the development, Al Jazeera noted that Gharibabadi, who serves as the head of Iran's technical negotiation team, declared that the United States has effectively breached all obligations stipulated in the agreement. "They are continuing their attacks, and Iran is busy with the task of defending the country. Therefore, Tehran has also suspended the implementation of all its commitments and the agreement," Gharibabadi said, as cited by Fars News.
Iranian officials have frequently accused the U.S. of violating the terms of the memorandum and had previously warned that continued aggression would lead to the imposition of certain conditions. With this latest announcement, Iran has formally indicated that the agreement has effectively ended, and it will no longer implement any of its provisions.
The conflict began on February 28, following joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. Within hours, the hostilities expanded across much of West Asia. In response, Iran launched a series of missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military bases in the region and Israel, while effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global maritime route for oil and gas.
After approximately 40 days of fighting, an interim ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan on April 8. This led to the signing of an interim memorandum of understanding on June 17, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, aimed at extending the ceasefire by 60 days and establishing a framework for continuous negotiations toward a permanent peace treaty. However, the truce collapsed after both sides engaged in renewed fighting over maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, rendering the memorandum effectively void.
