In late 2007, a 20-year-old Lionel Messi, then a young player with shaggy hair and a shy smile, participated in a charity campaign for Barcelona where he bathed a six-month-old infant in a plastic tub. That infant was Lamine Yamal. Nineteen years later, the child from that viral photograph has emerged as a key player for Spain, preparing to challenge Messi’s Argentine side for the ultimate trophy.
Speaking about the historical image during a conversation with American football legend Tom Brady on Friday, the Barcelona icon described the situation as surreal. Messi remarked, "That photo with Lamine… when he was just a baby, and now we are facing each other in the final. It is simply crazy!"
Messi offered high praise for the young star who currently wears the number 10 jersey for his beloved club. "Lamine is a fantastic player. He plays for the club I love, so I always follow him. At just 19, he is already an icon of world football, and he has his whole career ahead of him. He has a great opportunity to make history now," Messi said. He added that while he wishes the youngster well, he and his team are determined to prevent him from succeeding in the final. "Honestly, this photo is proof of how strange life can be," he noted.
Yamal played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s recent season, contributing 18 goals and 25 assists as the team secured a domestic treble. Acknowledging the threat Yamal poses, Messi emphasized that Argentina is fully prepared. "We will try to play a good match to ensure he cannot perform at his best, though that will be difficult. Like Spain, he has some great strengths, but we have our own strengths as well," Messi stated.
Although Yamal, who has already extended his contract with Barcelona until 2031, is widely considered a future world leader in the sport, Messi made it clear that there will be no concessions for his "disciple" in the high-voltage final.
