The Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has arrested retired Major Md. Mozaffar Hossain, a fugitive accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman, after 45 years on the run.
The arrest took place on Thursday (July 16) in the Banani DOHS area of the capital. Additional Commissioner of DB, Md. Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the development.
According to police sources, Major (Retd.) Mozaffar Hossain had been evading law enforcement for decades. Acting on a tip-off, a DB team conducted a raid in Banani DOHS and apprehended him. The Detective Branch stated that further details regarding the arrest would be shared later.
Ziaur Rahman, who served as the sixth president of Bangladesh, was also a former army chief and a prominent sector commander during the 1971 Liberation War. He founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on September 1, 1978.
On May 30, 1981, President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated at the Chittagong Circuit House by a group of mutinous army officers. Following the assassination, his body was secretly buried in a forest in Raozan, Chittagong. Three days later, authorities recovered his remains, transported them to Dhaka, and laid him to rest near the National Parliament House.
The sudden arrest of a key fugitive after nearly four and a half decades has brought the high-profile assassination case back into the spotlight.
