49 Indian media outlets spread fake and misleading news against Bangladesh

At least 49 Indian media outlets are spreading fake and misleading news against Bangladesh.

Following the recent political changes in Bangladesh, the trend of spreading fake and misleading news is increasing in some Indian media outlets. A recent report by the international fact-checking organization ‘Rumor Scanner’ has revealed that from August to December, at least 49 Indian media outlets have published 13 fake news.

After Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in the face of mass protests on August 5, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Since then, baseless news about Bangladesh has been spreading one after another in Indian media outlets.

According to Rumor Scanner, these rumors include fake letters in the name of Sheikh Hasina, false news about Dr. Yunus’ illness, baseless claims to lift the ban on banned militant organizations, and religiously provocative information. Some of these rumors have gone viral on social media.

For example, Indian media claimed that Sheikh Hasina had written an open letter from Delhi blaming the US after losing power. However, this letter has been proven to be fake. Similarly, the news of Dr. Yunus being admitted to the ICU is also false.

In addition, some Indian media outlets are circulating fake videos of communal attacks in different parts of Bangladesh. One video shows Muslims attacking a Hindu temple and vandalizing an idol. However, investigation revealed that it is a video of an idol being immersed in East Burdwan district of India.

Popular Indian media outlets Republic Bangla, Hindustan Times, Zee News and many others have been named in the list of such fake news. Experts believe that such confusion can put the diplomatic relations of both countries at risk.

The Bangladesh government has called for diplomatic initiatives to counter such rumors. According to analysts, the media and governments of both countries need to play a responsible role in countering rumors.
