The viral image of trampling the Indian national flag, which was first circulated on December 1 by an X account called Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus, is not real, but was created with the help of artificial intelligence or AI technology.

The resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister brought an end to the long rule of the Awami League government. In the days following the fall of the government, violence in the country became more pronounced. During this time, political violence, looting and attacks on religious minorities occurred across the country.

This internal unrest also had an impact on India-Bangladesh relations. There was a strong reaction in India, alleging torture on minorities in Bangladesh.

In continuation of this, incidents such as burning the national flag in front of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata and attacking and vandalizing the Assistant High Commission in Agartala took place.

Amidst such heated situations, a picture has gone viral on social media. In the picture, a person wearing a Punjabi and a cap holding the national flag of Bangladesh is seen trampling the Indian national flag.

However, this picture is not real, it is created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The matter was reported by the fact-checking or information-checking company Rumor Scanner.

Rumor Scanner says that the team’s investigation revealed that the viral image of the Indian national flag being trampled is not real, but was created with the help of artificial intelligence or AI technology.

They also said that the existence of the image could not be found in any reliable source using a reverse image search to verify its authenticity. Rumor Scanner’s search also found that the image was only circulated on social media. Usually, when such an incident occurs, it is not only spread on social media but also published in the form of reports in the national media.

For example, the fact checker organization says that a few days ago, there was an incident of protesting by drawing Indian and Israeli flags on the ground and walking on them in various universities in Bangladesh. The country’s leading media outlets published reports about that incident. The reports also included relevant photos and detailed information about the incident. But this was not the case in this photo.

While investigating the origin of the claimed photo, the scanner team found that it was first circulated on December 1 from an X account called Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus.

The rumor scanner team has found examples of spreading various rumors from this account before.

The rumor scanner team has analyzed the viral photo in depth. The analysis shows that one of the toes of the person in the photo’s right foot is unusually half visible. There is a fold in the pajamas that looks like a dhoti. The fold of the cloth in the red circle of the Bangladesh flag is also not normal.

In addition, there are inconsistencies in the reflection of light, shadows, and the expression of the person’s eyes in the photo. Such inconsistencies are usually seen in photos created by artificial intelligence (AI).

The fact-checking agency said that after noticing such discrepancies, various artificial intelligence detection websites were used to further confirm the image. The analysis of these websites found up to 99 percent certainty that the image was created using AI technology.

Rumor Scanner reported that the observations of the deepfake detection platform Trumedia also say that there is significant evidence of manipulation in the discussed image. That is, the image was created using AI or artificial intelligence.

Therefore, the claim and promotion of the image that a person wearing a Punjabi and a cap holding the national flag of Bangladesh is trampling on the national flag of India is made using AI technology; which is false.
